Environmental Expertise - Without Borders

Through our network of nearly 1,000 volunteers from across 65+ countries, we are eliminating one of the greatest barriers to addressing ecological threats: lack of access to scientific and technical expertise.

Ecologists Without Borders (EcoWB) provides professional, volunteer specialists to support community-led conservation, restoration, and sustainable natural resource management initiatives.

Every volunteer assignment begins with the needs and priorities of the community – as they define them.

Our role is shaped by what local partners are working to achieve and the expertise and support they need to get there.

Is EcoWB right for your project?

What kinds of projects do we support?

We prioritize community-led projects that:

  1. Include youth, women, marginalized groups, and Indigenous or tribal communities
  2. Have existing or planned conservation projects that require professional skills (e.g., ecology, GIS, community engagement, or scientific review)
  3. Align with these interests*:
  • Ecological Research & Analysis: Biodiversity, aquatic systems, spatial analysis
  • Species & Habitat Conservation: Protection and restoration of land/water ecosystems
  • Sustainable Resource Use: Fisheries, forestry, blue carbon, marine areas
  • Regenerative Agriculture: Agroforestry, permaculture, aquaponics, soil health
  • Urban Sustainability: Waste reduction, green spaces, water access, urban forestry
  • Pollution Reduction: Tackling micro- and macroplastics
  • Sustainable Ecotourism: Community-led conservation tourism

*We will consider innovative ideas outside of the above on a case-by-case basis.

What EcoWB cannot provide

There are a few requests for support that we cannot fulfill:

  • Direct project funding, grants, or other financial support
  • Support for medical, legal, political, or religious activities
  • General labor
  • Work Visas
  • Travel insurance
  • Emergency services
  • Projects that do not have a clear need for volunteer support

Ready to request support?

If you believe your initiative is a good match, here's what happens next:

  1. Tell us more about you and what support you seek using the EcoWB Volunteer Request Proposal Form.
  2. The EcoWB team will assemble a group of technical specialists to review your volunteer request proposal across three areas: 1) volunteer support feasibility; 2) alignment with our mission; and 3) potential for impact.
  3. The EcoWB team will respond within 4–6 weeks from the date of your submission with our initial recommendation and next steps.
